December 2021 will always be a special milestone in my life. It marked my very first time traveling abroad. It wasn’t just any trip, it was to Expo 2020 Dubai, an event that brought together nations from across the world to showcase their cultures, innovations, and visions for the future. I stepped into an international event for the first time, and it was a journey that opened my eyes to the incredible diversity and creativity that exists across our globe.
Stepping Into an International Showcase
The moment I arrived at Expo 2020, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale and energy of the event. Pavilions from every corner of the world, each representing a unique perspective and vision for the future. I walked through spaces filled with art, technology, and history, all while learning about the ways different countries are tackling global challenges like climate change, sustainability, and innovation. It felt surreal to be part of something so grand and so globally significant.
As I walked from pavilion to pavilion, I didn’t just see exhibits, I saw stories. Every country had its own narrative to tell, from futuristic technologies to deep-rooted cultural traditions. The United States, Japan, India, and so many others showcased their most exciting achievements, from cutting-edge architecture to immersive digital experiences. I was amazed at how much I could learn about so many countries in just a single day. It was like stepping into a microcosm of the world, where every corner of the globe was brought to life, and I, for the first time, was in the center of it all.
Discovering the Old and New of Dubai
But my trip wasn’t just about the Expo, it was also about exploring Dubai itself, a city that blends the old with the new in fascinating ways. I made sure to visit both Old Dubai and the more modern parts of the city to truly understand the contrast between different ways of life.
In Old Dubai, I wandered through the narrow alleys of the Al Fahidi Historic District, where I got a glimpse of what life might have been like in the past. The old houses, traditional souks, and winding streets gave me a sense of the rich history that Dubai was built on. The smell of spices filled the air, and the sound of merchants bargaining brought a certain charm to the place. It was in this part of Dubai that I felt a connection to the past, a connection to the roots of the city and the way it had evolved over time.
On the other hand, the new parts of Dubai, like the towering skyscrapers, the luxurious shopping malls, and the artificial islands, offered a completely different story. It was a city that looked to the future, a modern marvel built on ambition, wealth, and innovation. I stood in awe at the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and watched the nightly light shows that celebrated Dubai’s futuristic outlook.
A Journey of Contrasts
The more I explored, the more I realized how different life could be from one place to another. The Expo was a perfect reflection of this diversity. Some countries focused on sustainability and environmental solutions, others on technological advancements, while others celebrated their rich cultural traditions. It struck me how interconnected our world is, yet how each country has its own approach to progress, community, and life itself.
A Life-Changing Experience
Looking back, my trip to Expo 2020 Dubai was much more than just my first international experience. It was a realization that the world is full of stories, cultures, and visions that are waiting to be discovered. I saw how countries, despite their differences, are all striving for a better future, whether through technological innovation, sustainable practices, or preserving their cultural heritage.
For me, it wasn’t just about being part of an international event. It was about seeing the world in a new light, understanding that we’re all part of a larger global community, and recognizing the importance of collaboration, learning, and growth.
This trip was just the beginning of my journey into exploring the world, and I’m more excited than ever to see where it takes me next. Crossing that border wasn’t just a physical act, it marked the start of a deeper exploration into how we connect as a global society, how we learn from one another, and how we continue to shape the future together.
This was my first time crossing the border, but it was also an eye-opener to different countries that I will be visiting in the future. This month marks a new journey for me to become one day a full-time traveller!
