Raising the Bar: How I Organized Lebanon’s Largest Youth Leadership Event

Yes, I challenged myself again! Last year, I successfully organized the biggest event for the United Nations Development Programme – Youth Leadership Programme in its 9th cohort, UNDP YLP9. I brought together 350 youth from all over Lebanon for an impactful two-day boot camp. It was an amazing success, but I decided to take it further. With the 10-year anniversary of the Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) this year, I set my sights on an even bigger challenge: organizing an event for over 1,000 youth.

The Planning Begins

Months before the event, I dove into the planning. Organizing such a large-scale event came with its own set of challenges, especially given the current situation in Lebanon. Security concerns, political instability, and financial constraints were looming over me as I worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life.

With limited resources, it seemed like an impossible task. But this is where the strength of a community truly shines. My network of YLP alumni stepped up in ways I never imagined. They helped me establish a connection with the Lebanese American University Global Affairs Service Center (LAU GASC), which partnered with me to make this event a reality. Our advisory board played a critical role in managing logistics, overseeing the monumental task of hosting 1,000 people in one space.

Strength Through Partnerships and Networks

Beyond the logistical support, the network of partners and alumni made it possible for me to organize 30 interactive workshops, covering a wide range of topics. There was also an exhibition featuring 24 startups, showcasing youth innovation, and plenty of fun activities to keep the energy high throughout the forum. This year’s forum wasn’t just another event; it was a testament to the power of community collaboration and youth leadership.

A Personal Challenge

On a personal level, this was one of the most challenging experiences I’ve faced. The pressure was high, the obstacles seemed endless, and there were many sleepless nights. But as difficult as it was, it also felt like a celebration of 10 years of youth empowerment through YLP and UNDP. Having been a part of the YLP journey for the past six years, I felt incredibly proud and grateful to contribute to its growth and success.

This may have been the largest youth event ever hosted by UNDP in Lebanon, but it’s left me asking—what’s next? Could I take it regional, or even international? Only time will tell.
