Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of conversations about creating impact through our work. But what does it really mean to “create an impact”? We hear the word “impactful” used all the time to describe the work we do. However, simply following the tasks outlined in our job description, even if they’re essential, doesn’t necessarily mean we’re standing out or truly making an impact.
Going Beyond the 9-to-5
Let’s face it: doing your job well is important, after all, that’s why we’re paid to do it. But simply meeting expectations doesn’t automatically create the kind of impact we aim for. The real magic happens when we go beyond the basics. When we choose to go the extra mile, not because we have to, but because we genuinely want to, that’s where real impact begins.
Think about it: the extra effort we put in, the initiative we take, and the contributions we make that go beyond our job descriptions, that’s what sets us apart. Impact is about making waves, not just ticking boxes. It’s about pushing boundaries and doing more than what’s expected, in both big and small ways.
Rethinking What “Impact” Really Means
But here’s where it gets interesting: does this idea of impact apply only to a select few professions? For example, do doctors automatically make more of an impact because they save lives, while workers in construction don’t, even though without them, we wouldn’t have homes or hospitals?
What about the electrician? They might not save lives, but they provide the power that keeps our homes, schools, and hospitals functioning. Does this mean they don’t make an impact? Of course not.
And what about the farmer? Without farmers, we wouldn’t have food to feed our families. They might not be in the headlines, but their role is just as impactful in ensuring society keeps running smoothly.
Questioning the Traditional Notion of “Impact”
It’s time to rethink what we consider “impact”. Too often, we equate impact with certain prestigious professions or big, visible achievements. But every role, no matter how small or seemingly simple, contributes to the world around us. Every job plays a part in shaping our society.
We often don’t recognize the diversity of impact that exists across professions. And that’s where diversity and inclusivity come into play. It’s not just the doctors or CEOs who make a difference; it’s also the construction workers, electricians, and farmers who are building and sustaining the very foundation of our world.
Everyone Makes an Impact—In Their Own Way
The truth is, everyone makes an impact, but it looks different depending on the role, the person, and the effort they put in. Impact doesn’t need to look a certain way. It’s about doing your part, no matter how big or small, and contributing to something greater than yourself.
It’s time to stop comparing and start recognizing the value in every role. Whether you’re saving lives, building homes, providing food, or simply doing your job with passion and dedication, you’re making an impact. Real impact comes from giving your best, no matter the task, and contributing to the larger picture.
